Make Time for Yourself This National Wellness Month
August is National Wellness Month — what are you doing to improve your physical and mental well-being? With all the distractions and obligations of modern life, prioritizing your own health can sometimes be difficult. However, neglecting time to yourself can have negative consequences on your long-term health. We spoke to Heidi Greer, FNP-C, a nurse practitioner at the Elmer Hugh Taylor Clinic in Beardstown, about why personal wellness is so important and what people can do to improve their well-being.
In your experience, what are some of the biggest challenges you see on physical and mental wellness in Western Illinois?
Some common challenges include access to healthcare in rural areas, financial barriers, awareness of health conditions and importance of early intervention/prevention of such conditions, and stigma — especially with mental health.
How often do you see misinformation having a negative impact on people's wellness? How can people learn to differentiate between good and bad advice?
Misinformation is another challenge that is becoming more of a concern as social media use increases. Some will rely on social media, friends, or even multi-level marketers selling dietary supplements to give advice on wellness and health. This can keep people from seeking screening and interventions and cause adverse effects to their health.
Always know the source and ensure it is reliable. Factcheck the information by verifying the credentials of the individual giving the information — for example, what is their degree or certification? Ask for evidence-based methods regarding the information. Evaluate their motivation behind the product or information they are giving you.
What are some ways in which you work to improve your well-being?
I stay very active. I enjoy walking nearly every day. Walking improves my physical health and mental well-being. Not only have I been able to improve my blood pressure and weight — which makes me feel healthier — but it’s also a way to relieve stress and a time to clear my thoughts. Healthy eating is a priority of mine. I also enjoy listening to music and have a few other hobbies that are a huge asset to my well-being.
What are some quick and easy steps people can take to improve their well-being?
Some days are stressful and time can feel restricted, but taking 30 minutes of “you” time daily is nevertheless important. This can mean a 30-minute walk, a 30-minute appointment with your healthcare provider, or simply 30 minutes of quiet solitude. This is not only healthy for you but can be healthy for your family as well.
What are some ways a regular annual physical can help improve someone's physical and mental well-being?
Regular annual physical exams enable early detection of potential health issues and provide you with an opportunity to discuss or receive preventative care. Screenings performed during this time can save lives, so ensure you’re receiving age-appropriate screenings as well as learning why they’re important. Finally, your routine physical gives you time to talk one on one with your provider about your medical history, disease risk, current health, health habits, and preventive plans for promoting your well-being for years to come.
