Job Summary

The Assistant Manager of Surgical Services works under the supervision of the Manager of Surgical Services and the Physician in charge of Surgery. The Assistant Manager supports the Manager in the planning, organization, and coordination of patient care activities, human resources, and operational functions within the Perioperative area to include pre-operative, post-op/recovery, intraoperative and central/sterile. The Assistant Manager provides departmental leadership and coverage as assigned, including in the absence of the Manager, and promotes a work environment conducive to effective communication, collaboration, team building and professionalism.

Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Staff Development

• Support the daily operations of Surgical Services and provide leadership coverage in the absence of the Manager.
• Maintain clinical competency and serve as a resource for perioperative nursing best practices.
• Promote compliance with regulatory requirements, nursing standards, and perioperative guidelines.
• Assist with staff orientation, training, competency assessments, and ongoing professional development.
• Encourage professional growth and participation in specialty nursing organizations and educational opportunities.
• Support a collaborative culture focused on excellence in patient care.

Financial & Operational Support

• Assist in the development and management of departmental budgets.
• Monitor departmental expenses and identify opportunities for cost control and efficiency.
• Participate in fiscal planning and decision-making that supports quality patient care.
• Assist with evaluating, requesting, and implementing equipment and resources needed to support surgical services.
• Support departmental growth initiatives and strategic goals.

Quality, Safety & Process Improvement

• Assist with the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
• Monitor quality and safety indicators and assist with reporting requirements.
• Support infection prevention and control practices throughout Surgical Services.
• Reinforce emergency preparedness procedures and staff readiness.
• Collaborate with leadership and staff to identify opportunities that enhance patient outcomes and operational effectiveness.

Leadership & Communication

• Foster effective communication among patients, families, physicians, staff, and other departments.
• Participate in leadership, departmental, and interdisciplinary meetings.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, coaching, and retention of high-quality team members.
• Assist with employee evaluations and performance development activities.
• Promote accountability, professionalism, teamwork, and positive workplace culture.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and uphold ethical and professional standards.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with community healthcare providers and partners.

Patient Experience

• Support an environment focused on compassionate, patient-centered care.
• Address patient and family concerns in a timely and professional manner.
• Champion initiatives that improve patient satisfaction and overall experience.
• Assist staff in delivering exceptional service throughout the perioperative journey.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required, or willingness to obtain within the established timeframe.
• Current Illinois Registered Nurse license.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities and commitment to professional excellence.

Preferred Experience & Skills

• Experience in perioperative nursing with progressive leadership responsibilities.
• Strong knowledge of perioperative nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and patient safety practices.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to motivate, mentor, and develop team members.
• Strong decision-making skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.
• Commitment to quality improvement and patient-centered care.

Work Environment

• Work is performed in office, surgical, and patient care environments.
• Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, hazardous materials, radiation, and infectious diseases may occur.
• Requires the ability to respond to department needs and provide support beyond traditional business hours when necessary.
• Frequent interaction with patients, families, physicians, staff, and community healthcare partners.
